Southeast Asia Shines: Visa-Free Policies and Flight Connectivity Propel Travel Growth in 2024
Southeast Asia continues to dominate as a favoured travel destination, driven largely by visa-free policies that simplify international travel
Notably, bookings to Denpasar (Bali) surged by 73% compared to 2023, attributed to the launch of direct flights from Bengaluru to Bali by Indigo, making the destination more accessible to Indian travellers. Other international destinations also witnessed significant growth, including Tbilisi (27%), Tashkent (100%), Almaty (73%), Da Nang (60%), and Baku (133%).
Domestically, beach and island destinations emerged as new favourites in 2024. Bookings to Agatti Island in Lakshadweep rose by 94%, while Diu experienced a staggering 130% growth. These trends were supported by the launch of direct flights, with Indigo connecting Bengaluru to Agatti and FLY91 linking Goa to Diu.
Budget accommodations remained popular, chosen by 46% of travellers, slightly down from 50% in 2023, indicating a gradual shift toward mid-range or premium options.
Domestic bookings comprised 86% of one-way trips, and 76% of international travel was also one-way, indicating a preference for flexibility in itineraries. The advance booking window for international trips increased by 5%, suggesting travellers plan earlier to secure better deals.
Affordable travel and payment innovations played a significant role in driving growth this year. Affordable travel options saw a doubling in adoption by Gen Z and Senior Citizens, reflecting the increasing inclusivity of travel offerings. Flexible travel payment options gained significant traction, with a 1.4 times higher adoption rate among Gen Z, underscoring the importance of affordability and payment flexibility in influencing travel decisions.
Anuj Rathi, Chief Business and Growth Officer, Cleartrip said, “The year has been great for the travel industry. With relaxed visa and travel policies, Southeast Asian destinations have emerged as travellers’ top choices. This year also marked a rise in the adoption of affordable travel options, particularly among GenZ and Senior Citizens, and an increase in flexible travel payment methods. These trends reflect the evolving dynamics of the travel industry and the changing preferences of today’s travellers.”
