Creating a Sustainable Haven: The KLCC SDG Precinct
Creating a Sustainable Haven: The KLCC SDG Precinct
Overview
In a visionary move back in 2022, the Centre embarked on a groundbreaking endeavor to transform the KLCC precinct into a sustainable oasis. Collaborating with esteemed partners like Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Malaysia Airlines, Traders Hotel, Impiana KLCC Hotel, and Suria KLCC Shopping Mall, our aim was crystal clear: to shape KLCC into a destination where event attendees and visitors could engage in sustainable practices seamlessly across all aspects of their stay – from meetings and dining to accommodation, recreation, and shopping.
The Journey
Our journey began with a pioneering partnership with Urbanice Malaysia, the nation’s Center of Excellence for Sustainable Cities and Community Wellbeing. This collaboration was instrumental in charting our sustainability roadmap and aligning our efforts with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). Through workshops and dialogues facilitated by Urbanice Malaysia, we rallied our precinct partners around a common goal: to create a more regenerative, thriving, and sustainable precinct.
KLCC SDG Precinct: A Vision Unveiled
Central to our vision was the concept of a sustainable destination that nurtures responsible engagement among delegates and visitors. To materialize this vision, we organized workshops led by industry luminary Guy Bigwood, founder of the Global Destination Sustainability Movement. These sessions provided a platform for knowledge exchange and ideation, empowering our partners to contribute their expertise towards making KLCC a beacon of sustainability in the events industry.
Empowering Collective Action
The KLCCBEA and Urbanice Symposium served as a pivotal moment for collective action and alignment. Through engaging discussions and strategic planning sessions, we forged stronger bonds and clarified our shared sustainability objectives. Guided by Urbanice Malaysia, we meticulously mapped our initiatives to the UNSDGs, laying the groundwork for collaborative projects aimed at fostering a sustainable precinct ecosystem.
The Result: A Unified Commitment
The culmination of our efforts was marked by the publication of a comprehensive report by Urbanice Malaysia. This report underscored the alignment of our sustainability initiatives with all 17 UNSDGs, encompassing a remarkable 119 out of 169 specified targets. With a collective commitment to address challenges like food waste generation and community engagement, we stand poised to embark on a transformative journey towards a more sustainable future.
