Baguiati Rail Pukur United Club Unveils 72nd Durga Puja Theme ‘Shabdo’
The Baguiati Rail Pukur United Club inaugurated its 72nd Durga Puja celebrations today with the unveiling of its theme, “Shabdo” (The Sound).
The pandal was virtually inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee for the celebration of durga puja .
This year’s theme, Shabdo, highlights the fading sounds of nature—bird calls, rustling leaves, and harmonious rhythms—that once defined everyday life but are increasingly lost to urbanisation.
A striking 20-feet bird installation forms the centrepiece, symbolising the grandeur of nature and the silence caused by the disappearance of avian life. Dynamic soundscapes and mime performances by Shubhendu Mukhopadhyay and Kaushik Biswas further underscore the ecological message, giving voice to the silenced calls of birds.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Gourab Biswas, Committee Member of Baguiati Railpukur United Club, said: “Our theme Shabdo is more than an artistic marvel – it is a wake-up call.”
He continued, “The sounds of birds and nature, once inseparable from our daily lives, are fading fast.”
He further added, “Through this creation, we hope to inspire action before silence becomes the only sound left for future generations.”
The theme has been brought to life by a collaborative team: Somnath Tamli (concept and design), Debprasad Hazra (idol sculpting), Dipankar Dey (light and shadow direction), and Bapi Das (pandal construction). Their work was supported by contributions from Samiran Jana (cinematography and editing), Poulami Bose (research), Faruk Shaikh (drawing and design), and Debayan Banerjee (sound and music).
With the Chief Minister’s inauguration, Shabdo reflects not only the spirit of Durga Puja but also a reminder of the need to preserve the natural sounds of life for future generations.
