AMERICAN AIRLINES ANNOUNCES SLEW OF NEW EUROPEAN ROUTES FOR SUMMER 2027

American Airlines is adding even more European hotspots to its growing list of destinations for the summer, with three new cities launching in early 2027 – Reykjavík (KEF), Vienna (VIE) and Porto (OPO). With the addition of these destinations, American will fly to 23 cities across Europe.

New shores, sights and scenery
From the outdoor wonders of Iceland to the rich heritage and intricate history of Austria, American is introducing travellers to two new countries within its European roster. Launching on May 27, American will return to Reykjavík (KEF) for the first time since 2019, flying from Philadelphia (PHL) to the Nordic country’s capital.  Also flying from PHL, American will be the first U.S. airline to connect directly to Vienna (VIE) starting May 6, marking American’s first time flying to Austria.

Next year, adding Reykjavík, Vienna and Porto to our portfolio gives our customers even more amazing destinations to explore – whether that’s traversing the volcanoes of Iceland, enjoying a slice of Sachertorte and the Opera in Vienna or walking the beautiful cobbled streets of Ribeira,” said José A. Freig, Vice President – International and Business Partner Operations at American Airlines. “We’re also excited to be expanding the number of Airbus A321XLR aircraft within our fleet, which will fly on an additional four routes next summer following its maiden transatlantic voyage between JFK and Edinburgh in summer 2026.”

New routes to firm favourites
In addition to the three new destinations American is introducing next summer, the airline is adding new routes to popular existing cities, including service from New York (JFK) to Amsterdam (AMS) and Nice, France (NCE), as well as from Charlotte (CLT) to Barcelona (BCN). With the addition of these routes, the airline will fly more than 80 peak daily trans-Atlantic flights from U.S. throughout summer 2027.

More London Heathrow
London Heathrow (LHR) is one of the most important cities for premium travelers, and American is proud to serve as the largest U.S. airline in the market. In 2027, the airline will increase its presence at the airport with the reintroduction of a fourth daily flight between JFK and LHR. In partnership with British Airways, travelers will have up to 14 daily flights between New York City and London – the most of any airline partnership.

British Airways and American are always looking for opportunities to elevate the customer experience. This fall, the airlines will jointly open a new joint check-in space at LHR’s Terminal 3, where American operates.

American’s Airbus A321XLR
Next summer, American’s newest addition to its fleet – the Airbus A321XLR – will fly on a total of five routes across the Atlantic, including:

New York (JFK) – Amsterdam (AMS)
New York (JFK) – Nice (NCE)
New York (JFK) – Edinburgh (EDI)

American is the first U.S. airline to introduce the A321XLR.
