Walk Japan Launches the Self-Guided Salt Road Wayfarer Tour

Walk Japan has just launched its newest self-guided itinerary, the Self-Guided Salt Road Wayfarer – a six-day, five-night journey traversing the historic Salt Road, an ancient trading route that once connected the Sea of Japan with the castle town of Matsumoto.

Designed for experienced walkers, with daily walks ranging from 17km to 21.5km, the itinerary follows the footsteps of the bokka porters who once transported salt and other goods through the rugged landscapes of the Japan Alps. Winding through Nagano and Niigata Prefectures, the route passes deep valleys, pristine beech forests, crystal-clear streams and traditional mountain villages, offering an authentic glimpse into one of Japan’s most remote and little-visited regions.

Along the way, travellers can unwind in traditional onsen, discover the UNESCO-recognised Fossa Magna Park, and enjoy hearty mountain cuisine alongside fresh seafood from the Sea of Japan.

Each guest receives a Wayfarer Route Booklet, containing detailed walking directions, logistical information, and photographs to help aid navigation. Guests also have access to 24-hour English-language support and baggage transfers between each accommodation, allowing them to enjoy the journey with just a light day pack.

Pricing starts at JPY238,000 based on double occupancy. Tour dates are available from May to June and September to November.
