Why August 2026 Could Be Tenerife’s Biggest Stargazing Month Yet

Tenerife has long been synonymous with year-round sunshine, golden beaches and spectacular volcanic landscapes. On 12 August, however, visitors may discover that one of the island’s greatest attractions begins before sunset and continues long into the night.

During the late afternoon and early evening, a partial solar eclipse will see around 70% of the Sun obscured by the Moon, before darkness gives way to the peak of the annual Perseid meteor shower, one of the most prolific displays of shooting stars visible anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere.

Although the Perseids are active from mid-July until late August, their spectacular peak is expected overnight on 12–13 August, making this one of the best opportunities of the year to experience the shower.

The timing makes the evening even more remarkable. Because solar eclipses occur during a new moon, there will be little moonlight to compete with the night sky, creating ideal conditions for watching the Perseids later that evening.

Although the eclipse and Perseids will be visible across much of Europe, Tenerife’s high altitude, exceptionally clear skies and protection under the Canary Islands’ Sky Law make it one of Europe’s premier destinations for stargazing.

By day, visitors can relax on the beaches of southern Tenerife. By nightfall, they could be standing more than 2,000 metres above sea level in Teide National Park, beneath some of the clearest and most protected night skies anywhere.
