Water independence for off-grid homes moves closer with launch of world-first machine
For architects designing in water-stressed regions, a new solution for clients demanding greater water independence and security has arrived. Ahbstra, a UK climate tech company, has launched the ARK, a plug-and-play machine that uses Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs), Nobel Prize-winning chemistry, to generate up to 500 litres of clean drinking water a day directly from the air, even in arid conditions. About the size of a shipping container, it is designed to be installed on-site as a standalone system, and is already being incorporated into architectural plans for high-end residences and boutique hotels across the Mediterranean.
The end of trucked water
The launch comes as water scarcity reaches a tipping point across southern Europe. Around 30% of people in the region face permanent water stress, with Greek islands entering almost permanent states of emergency. For many of these properties, the only option has been to truck water in, an expensive, unreliable and increasingly unsustainable solution as the reservoirs supplying those trucks themselves run dry. For architects and developers designing in water-constrained locations, independent water supply has become as fundamental a consideration as energy generation or structural integrity.
Octavio Mestre, founder of Barcelona-based Octavio Mestre Associate Architects and one of Catalonia’s most respected architectural voices, speaking at the Barcelona launch, said: “The briefs I receive for private holiday residences in water-stressed regions are changing. Clients are demanding full off-grid capability from the outset, energy, water, everything. We have made enormous progress on energy, but water has always been the hardest part. The question that comes up again and again is simple: where does the water come from in the first place?”
The ARK addresses this directly as the first machine to make atmospheric water harvesting commercially viable at the scale a family home requires, operating reliably even in arid Mediterranean and Middle Eastern conditions. Water can be used to replenish wells and cisterns or connect directly to a property’s existing water system. For estate owners dependent on water deliveries, it offers genuine independence, insulating properties from supply disruptions, rising trucking costs and an infrastructure under growing strain.
Early buyers include Ibiza’s popular Jondal restaurant, luxury villa construction company Ramos Obra y Deco, and architect Thomas Ermacora.
The missing piece of the off-grid home

The ARK represents a shift in how water is considered at the design stage. Where solar panels, heat pumps and battery storage have already become standard specifications for high-performance homes, water generation has until now remained the missing piece. The ARK changes that, offering architects and developers a plug-and-play solution that can be integrated into new builds or retrofitted into existing properties.
“What excites me about the ARK is the design freedom it creates. Water security across the Mediterranean region has always been something dealt with after the fact. Now we can think about it from the very beginning, and its size means it can be easily incorporated into existing residences too. For some clients it will sit quietly in the background, fully integrated and out of sight. For others, its beautiful design makes it a statement piece, something to showcase as part of a commitment to sustainable, self-sufficient living. That flexibility is what makes it a genuinely useful solution for architects,” Mestre added.
The ARK is priced at £150,000. It operates on approximately 10kW of power, a requirement many customers are meeting through on-site solar, and requires maintenance every six months. Initial buyers include villa owners and designers in the Balearic Islands, with first installations expected by early 2027.
Ahbstra founder Hashem Arouzi commented: “In Ibiza alone, there are over 15,000 properties not connected to the water supply. The wells that previously supplied them are running dry. Islands are developing desalination, but water from these plants will not reach these properties. The ARK is designed for exactly this challenge, and for the millions of off-grid, water-stressed homes around the world where existing methods simply don’t work.”
Ahbstra is scaling production of the ARK in Barcelona, and is providing installation and maintenance in partnership with one of Spain’s leading mechanical and engineering firms. The company has raised £7m to date from family offices and strategic partners, and has an open investment round to support increasing production capacity. It is also developing smaller-scale water systems and investing in R&D into MOF-based carbon capture.
