As the new purpose-built Viking Octantis® celebrates the start of its inaugural season in the Great Lakes, this marks new milestones for its expedition voyages. The Viking Octantis recently completed a roundtrip through the Welland Canal–a key section of the St. Lawrence Seaway connecting Lake Ontario and Lake Erie which meets the purpose it was specifically designed for–to reach the Great Lakes region.
Â
Sailing a variety of itineraries between Toronto and Duluth, the ship will remain in the Great Lakes until October 2022. The Viking Polaris®, a second expedition vessel, will debut later this year and join the Viking Octantis in the Great Lakes for the 2023 season.
Â
Per Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking, said that their expedition ships were designed with the Great Lakes in mind, since the region has long been underserved by cruise lines. He added that they are delighted by the warmth and enthusiasm of local communities over this project.
