Portugal has become the first country to speed up UK travellers arriving at its airports, making way for the reinforcement of the importance of British tourists to the EU travel and tourism economy.

British travelers are now able to avoid long queues when they travel to Portugal as the latter is opening its e-gates to them. The passport e-lanes for Britons have been set up in Faro, Lisbon and Porto in mainland Portugal and at Funchal in Madeira.

Portugal is sending a message that it does not intend to prioritize EU tourists at the border, defying Brexit rules in the process. This is made possible by opening their e-gates to British travelers.Â

With the UK no longer being part of European Union since the 31st of January 2020, new travel rules have been enforced. Among the rules includes the British passports having to be checked manually, rather than electronically.

Britain is one of the key source markets for Portugal. Its tourism jewel, The Algarve, was vorted World’s Leading Beach Destination 2021 by voters of World Travel Awards.
