DESTINATION: CAMBODIA
Facing the Gulf of Thailand with the Mekong Delta flowing through it, and bordering Vietnam, Laos and Thailand, this ancient kingdom has undergone many changes and upheavals during its long history. Mostly famous for the UNESCO Heritage Angkor complex dating from the ancient Khmer empire in Siem Reap, situated between the Tonle Sap lake and the Kulen mountains. The capital Phnom Penh features the Royal palace and bustling markets, while further south lie the Cardamom mountains and Kampot, famous for their black pepper and wildlife. With a wonderful depth of cultural legacy in both handicrafts and history, the country is a treasure trove to visitors.
Both Siem Reap and Phnom Penh have expanded their hotel, conference and convention capacity and can now host large events. Siem Reap also has the option to host Gala Dinners at one of the Temple complexes in Angkor, a memorable addition to any event. There are 4 and 5-star hotel chains, as well as Heritage and Boutique properties to suite all groups.
Angkor Wat is the world’s biggest religious building, the grounds of the temple ruins extend over an area of more than 500 acres – that’s about 50 times larger than the site of Machu Picchu and that's not all! There are several previously undocumented ancient cities between 900 and 1,400 years old beneath the tropical forest floor in the area surrounding Angkor Wat. Some of these undiscovered cities are the size of Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh. The discoveries were made in June 2019 using laser technology.
