Due to the Kenya government’s requirement for visitors to register their Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) at least three days prior to travel, the country has fallen 17 places on the 2024 Africa Visa Openness Index.

The Index, compiled by the African Development Bank and African Union Commission, tracks visa openness and the ease of access to African countries.

Kenya’s introduction of new ETA policies earlier this year has made the country less accessible, says the 2024 Africa Visa Openness Index. The East African country now ranks 46 out of 54 African countries.

Before the introduction of the ETA application, citizens of many African countries could get a visa upon arrival in Kenya.

Now, they have to plan ahead, which is made more challenging when the registration system goes down or gets backed up. Sometimes users have to wait for hours to complete the registration process, reports voanews.com.
