THE RISE OF THE ‘MINI FARMHOUSE’: MEET SILCHESTER FARM

Set on the Hampshire/Berkshire border within easy reach of London, Silchester Farm offers a smaller, more relaxed take on the modern countryside escape, combining beautifully designed places to stay, seasonal food and drink and simple outdoor pursuits.

Accommodation ranges from larger houses designed for families and groups to The Pyggies, Silchester Farm’s elevated take on countryside cabin living, complete with king-sized beds, freestanding baths and views across the grounds.

Food is seasonal and rooted in the surrounding landscape, with produce sourced from the farm’s own kitchen gardens and local suppliers wherever possible. Trough Farm Shop offers coffee, fresh pastries, homemade bakes and locally sourced provisions, while dining experiences range from grazing feasts and sharing plates to wood-fired cooking and open-air dining beneath the Dutch Barn. The farm’s two licensed bars pour local ales, selected wines and Silchester Farm’s own Wingless Eagle spirits.

Outdoors, guests can cool off in the swimming pool, play tennis, borrow bikes to explore the surrounding countryside or simply wander the grounds. Seasonal events, communal dining experiences and markets add a sociable element throughout the year.

It’s a countryside stay that takes some of the ingredients that have made the ‘Farmhouse’ escape so popular and pares them back into something more intimate and unfussy: less sprawling country club, more considered rural retreat, no membership required.

Nightly rates start from £250 based on two sharing.
